Domangburi Lights Up with Solar Energy

For the first time, every household in Domangburi, a village in Ghana’s Sawla Tuna Kalba District in the Savannah Region, has been powered by solar energy. Previously, the community depended on firewood, flashlights, and traditional oil lamps for light, which significantly impacted students’ ability to study after dark and limited local economic activities.

Thanks to the Renewable Energy for Communities Campaign by 350 Ghana Reducing Our Carbon (350 GROC), Domangburi now enjoys solar-powered homes. The campaign, dedicated to advancing renewable energy across Ghana, has installed 65 solar panels and bulbs in every house, and set up three solar streetlights at the local school and market.

At the installation ceremony, Chief Mumuni Alhassan expressed profound gratitude for the initiative, highlighting how crucial reliable lighting is for daily life and education. He praised renewable energy as a sustainable solution that will drive development and enhance the community’s quality of life.

Portia Adu Mensah, the national coordinator of 350 GROC, spoke passionately about the importance of continuing renewable energy efforts and the vital role of women in these initiatives.

Kongwura Adamu Seidu Jinkurige I, Paramount Chief of the Kong Traditional Area, noted that over 50 other communities in his area still lack electricity and called for similar interventions to benefit them.

This project is part of 350 GROC’s broader Renewable Energy for Communities Coalition, aiming to provide clean, sustainable energy to underserved areas throughout Ghana.
